Carpet Cleaning Methods – How to properly clean your carpet
Carpet cleaning methods have existed since before the 1950’s, and it still remains an unperfected art. Cleaning methods usually range from using some kind of chemical, to doing a full steam cleaning with a big machine. On top of all those choices there are thousands of stain types and most require certain chemicals and methods to remove them.
Let’s talk about the various carpet cleaning methods you can implement, and what product is best to use for each method.
Steam Cleaning
This is perhaps the best way to clean your carpet, especially if it is really dirty. You can either hire a local carpet cleaner to steam clean your carpet, or just rent/buy a carpet steamer and do it yourself.
If you hire someone locally to do it, usually they will come in a truck and have the equipment mounted on the inside, and run the hose from the truck into your home. Some local carpet cleaners will have a portable machine that they bring inside with them.
Steam cleaning your carpet means they spray detergent solution deep into the carpet at a very high pressure, and then immediately extract back out the loose dirt. Sometimes the machine can have rotary brushes that will really get down deep into your carpets pile, which some people may need done.
How good your carpet looks after a steam clean depends on several factors. When it comes to the operator, either you or a local company, then it depends on the skill and experience they have in steam cleaning carpet.
If you are looking for a way to make the carpet steamer have better results, you should look at adjusting the solution temperature and make it hotter, plus you should increase the spray pressure.
The vacuuming power itself is also very important since that is what removes the dirt after it has been loosened by the steam pressure. The best way to ensure great looking carpet after a steam clean is to take your time and move along slowly when cleaning it, so that you can be certain every bit of dirt has been picked up.

Tip: Using a great prep-spray before you steam clean will make that dirt loosen up more before you steam it. Also, if most of the dirt can be vacuumed up, then you shouldn’t waste your time or money doing a steam clean.
Carpet Shampooing
Shampooing your carpet is the process of releasing detergent solution into the carpet from a carpet shampooer with rotary brushes. The brushes then turn the detergent solution into foam and lather it into the carpet.
Then once the carpet is completely dry, you vacuum it to remove all the loose dirt. You can also add certain chemicals to the detergent that will make it dry faster, brighten colors, reduce odor, etc.
You could also do a combination of the shampooing and steam cleaning, giving your carpet a complete overhaul and ensuring that it is as clean as possible. If you do decide to do this, only do it on highly trafficked carpet and make sure you do the shampooing first.
Carpet Stain Removers
We all spill something on our carpet at some point in time; the best method to get rid of it usually is just using a good carpet stain remover . Spray it on, wait a minute, then scrub it off. This method of course only works with regular stains that are moderate in size, not if your entire carpet is dirty.
Foam Cleaning
Kind of like using a stain remover, foam carpet cleaner usually comes in an aerosol can and is scrubbed into the carpet using a sponge. Then once the foam is all dry, you vacuum it up removing all the loose dirt.
This carpet cleaning method is much more labor intensive then steaming or shampooing, but is good when you only want to clean a little section of carpet.
Bonnet Cleaning
This is the carpet cleaning method of attaching a very absorbent pad, also called a bonnet, to the bottom of a carpet cleaning machine with a rotary brush. You then spray the appropriate amount of detergent on the carpet and the rotary pad is used to agitate and remove the dirt in the carpet.
The best part about this carpet cleaning method is that once the pad (bonnet) gets used up, you can flip it over and use the other side, then when the other side is spent the pad can be cleaned and re-used again!
Dry Compound Cleaning
Many people like this carpet cleaning method, and if you decide to use it, you are required to sprinkle a dry chemical compound onto the carpet and then work it into the carpets pile using a machine. After letting it sit for just a little while, you vacuum it up removing all the loose dirt and the compound itself. This method does not use any water at all, so you don’t have to worry about over wetting your carpet with this carpet cleaning method.
